we.know.why.

We know precisely
what you need from your software.

Little secret: We come from the trade! And yours! untermStrich was founded in the mid-90s out of necessity, so to speak. At that time, our managing directors Peter Remitz and architect Guido R. Strohecker were searching in vain for a modern controlling solution for their own planning offices – amid the creeping shift from analog to digital.

Well, a virtue quickly emerged from necessity. In cooperation with other planning offices, untermStrich was developed, and, thus, a software wholly tailored to the needs of the industry was brought to the market.

“Now what? Sit back for a moment. First, we’ll take care of the installation for you. You determine the team in the start-up phase yourself. However, we will always be at your side for all important questions and assistance. And to ensure that you are always up to date with the latest technology and can use your individually optimized software as a tool for greater economic success, we provide maximum customer support and individual service, a constant range of webinars and an online academy. That goes without saying.”

Time tracking.
Time tracking?
TIME TRACKING!!!

Quite crucial for you, we know. That’s why we’re making it easier than ever for you and your team to track your time. And the best part? You can choose the mode yourself!

Whether so much software service is expensive?

A direct question, a direct answer. We attach great importance to a fair licensing concept. That means you can create as many employees as you like. The number determines the simultaneous access. There are no better or worse licenses.

And while we’re at it: The value added, which could be generated alone through seamless time recording within projects by untermStrich since 1.1. 2020, is just under 1.4 billion euros.

We support you with subsequent billing

The untermStrich Community grows daily by at least 1 office with an average of 8 employees.

Each of these employees processes an average of about 6h per week of post-billable changes on projects. With 4 weeks/month and 10.5 months of work per year, this amounts to around 252 hours at 100 EUR/hour in changes per employee.

This total shows the entire value chain of untermStrich customers and the potential for subsequent billing. We support you so that you can document your additional work and get the payment you deserve.

How much does a thought cost?

Let’s revolutionize an industry! That’s precisely what architect Guido R. Strohecker and engineer Peter Remitz did 20 years ago with their software untermStrich, the perfect tool to steer planning offices down successful economic paths. A conversation with the digital pioneers from the very first hour!

When Guido R. Strohecker and Peter Remitz think of the headwind they felt in their own guild in the early days, they have to smile today. “At that time, there were still enough architects and engineers who thought the CAD system was a voodoo tool. Of course, many asked what we wanted with software for organizing an office,” Strohecker recalls, shaking his head. That was the birth of untermStrich, the organization and management tool that is now used as the central mastermind by more than 67,000 users in planning offices worldwide.

Now let’s be honest: How do you start a successful software company when you actually build houses?

Strohecker: Well, to be honest, that happened out of necessity. At the time, I was an architect in an office with four colleagues and the only one who was already a father. So, as I had to bear financial responsibility, it, of course, quickly became clear to me that something was fundamentally wrong with our job. We worked around the clock, but we didn’t really earn anything. Fresh out of college, you quickly realize that there is a striking difference between dream, vision and reality. It was clear to me that a solution was needed here.

Remitz: We didn’t know each other at that time, but I also had exactly the same thought. And since I’m a technology freak, I simply programmed a small, fine piece of software for the office where I was employed to help us organize. Then, when we were introduced to each other by chance, it quickly became apparent that we shared a common vision.

What is the main problem that planners have to overcome

Strohecker: You often can’t answer one question: How do you make money with intellectual, immaterial performance? In short: How much do your thoughts cost? We don’t have a classic product whose value can be measured so easily. Our most important asset, the factor time, cannot be touched and pushed into the customer’s hand. We say clearly that we as planners must also ask ourselves a decisive question: What are we worth to ourselves? What is an office hour worth, what is our performance worth? And creativity? This is a discussion that could go on for a long time.

Remitz: I need to know how many hours I have available for a project. Both in the creative process and the implementation, but also in the technical work. Putting this time factor on paper is the ultimate business tool for modern planning offices. The topics that are dealt with in an office are varied and multi-layered. One thing we never learned in our training courses was business administration and corporate management. Yet, this is part of the necessary survival strategy in architecture and engineering offices, so this creative profession also has a stable economic background.

Why is untermStrich so smart?

Remitz: Because we know best what our licensees’ needs are. After all, we are users of the software. We have to link appointments with projects, these in turn with addresses and documents, and all this with a constant eye on our human resources and the company’s profitability. But preferably with little effort. And that’s precisely what we do. untermStrich becomes the central mastermind of every office, shortening paths and saving time so that everyone can concentrate on what brings money into the company – their planning projects.

When you hear the word update, you think of…

Remitz: (laughs) This is a permanent state of affairs for us. We are continually working on our software, adapting it to new technical requirements and changes in the construction industry. Our developers and programmers always have to be one giant leap ahead of any industry changes, so to speak. This is as true for us as for any other IT company. We offer efficient solutions to problems before they even arise in the planning offices. For example, that invoices can be flexibly changed and also postponed. When projects were delayed during the lockdown, we were at the forefront of this issue. For example, the software always provides a long-term liquidity forecast as a matter of course.

Creative minds simply have a hard time with organization…

Strohecker: Yes, that may be true. Nevertheless, good management is an absolute must. Otherwise, you will go under. To this day, we still witness discussions among professional colleagues about how difficult it is to measure design in terms of hours and costs. Yes, we are creative professionals. But we are not artists. We are independent entrepreneurs. We have to deal with costs and cost management every day. And at best, we do it well and efficiently. This knowledge is not revolutionary. It’s common sense.

Ing. Peter Remitz

Revolutions are obviously your thing. Instead of attending “Bau” in Munich – the largest construction trade fair – in 2021, you are inviting people to a digital academy with a five-day program.

Strohecker: Well. Years before Corona, we sometimes received bewildered looks regarding the ongoing webinars we offer our licensees. Only real trade shows count, the industry screamed. However, I think the importance of real-life trade shows has already lost a decent amount of ground in recent years. We can now show that information and discourse don’t have to be lost even in a crisis. You just have to change the channel. And we simply switch from the exhibition hall to the office of our respective customers or interested parties.

Remitz: What has gained enormously in importance in the past year is the home office topic. We have been practicing the option of a 100% home office for a long time. Our web application allows you to pop your entire office in your pocket, so to speak, and to enter at any time and from anywhere in the world, and to have complete access to all relevant data within seconds. An architect or engineer wants to invest as much time as possible in planning and as little as possible in the office administration. And that is precisely what we make possible.

One final question: How much does a thought cost?

Strohecker: (laughs) It was obvious that this question would come up. And there’s only one answer: ask untermStrich. Our mastermind has the answer to everything…
